Photonics

This programme is aimed at students who wish to develop their research interests and skills in photonics, this course offers the opportunity to undertake a major, individual, project and reporting the results in a full scientific report and presentation; it trains students: In appropriate research methods; to develop written and oral communication skills for both specialised and non-specialised audiences.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree in a relevant subject. IELTS score of 7.0 overall (minimum 6.5 in all elements).

Course modules

Modules include: Imaging; optical communications physics; lasers; optical measurement and devices; laboratory work; self-study project; 9-month research project. Optional modules: biomedical optics; fibre optics; laser optics; laser technology; non-linear optics; fibre communications; optical design; optical design laboratory; optical displays; optoelectronic components and devices; photonics structures; quantum optics.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on examinations and a dissertation.
