History of the Book

This course encompasses the history of literate culture as a whole. Its focus includes not only books, but also newspapers, magazines, chapbooks, and ephemera. The programme also considers the manuscript book in all its forms from the pre-classical, classical, and medieval periods.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally have a 1st or upper 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard (e.g. GPA 3.0 or higher); applicants who do not meet the formal academic requirements but who offer alternative qualifications and/or relevant experience may be considered; all students are required to possess a reader's ticket from the British Library; for some classes it will also be necessary to have a ticket of admission to the Department of Manuscripts in the British Library.

Course modules

Core modules include: The medieval book; printed text in Britain and elsewhere 1450-2010; research methodology. Optional modules: The historical reader: The practice and representation of reading 1400-1900; textual scholarship and contemporary editorial theory; western book structures; the serial and the book; the Renaissance book; digital publishing and book studies; the book in the ancient world; the look of the book.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on essays and a dissertation.

Since 2014, LAHP offers up to 80 AHRC studentships each year to research students in the arts and humanities studying at 1 of the 3 institutions over the next 7 years. Studentship candidates are advised to apply for a place to study well in advance of the closing deadline for LAHP studentship applications to ensure that they have the opportunity to consult with proposed supervisors in preparing the LAHP studentship application form.
