Latin American Studies

Research supervision is available in the following broad areas: History of Latin American historiography; history of Latin American anthropology; history of museums and collecting in Latin America and Iberia; Andean history; postcolonial Latin American History; independence and revolution in Latin America; the anthropology of violence and conflict (conflict and its aftermath, gangs, organised crime and the political economy of violence); the anthropology of democracy and the state transformation (peace-building operations and democratisation processes, neo-liberalisation and electoral politics); social movement and citizenship practises; transitional justice, human rights and memory work; the ethnography of the law (legal cultures and the judicialisation of politics); conflicts over extractive industries; the free culture movement as it pertains to editorial/publishing practices.

The School of Advanced Study (University of London) is a partner institution of the London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP) together with King's College London and UCL. Since 2014, LAHP offers up to 80 Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) studentships each year to research students in the arts and humanities studying at 1 of the 3 institutions over the next 7 years. Studentship candidates are advised to apply for a place to study well in advance of the closing deadline for LAHP studentship applications to ensure that they have the opportunity to consult with proposed supervisors in preparing the LAHP studentship application form.
