Secondary Education (Physics)

This course is designed to develop subject knowledge in physics to enable successful participants to broaden and deepen their academic knowledge so that they can progress to an Initial Teacher Education Programme (PGCE, GTP or SCITT); in addition to focusing on physics, the course provides input on the other main sciences within the curriculum (biology, Earth science/geology and chemistry) as well as giving the opportunity for participants to develop and review their subject knowledge within an educational context (school placement); the course consists of taught sessions, practical and investigative sessions, seminars, presentations, school visits and placements and extramural activities.

Entry requirements

A degree (normally a minimum 2.2, with no science based content) and 1 science A-level or equivalent and mathematics and English GCSE or equivalent (sports science or psychology as science A-levels are not accepted for entry in September 2011); or a science-based degree (normally a minimum 2.2) but not based on National Curriculum subjects and, 1 or more science A-levels or equivalent, as well as English language or mathematics GCSE or equivalent; or a science degree in 1 of the main National Curriculum subjects (biology, chemistry, physics, Earth science/geology) but no 2nd science at least to A-level or equivalent (those considering training to be a science teacher who have a 2nd science at least to A-level or equivalent would be eligible for consideration for the University's PGCE course).

Assessment methods

Assessment is by examination, laboratory work and coursework.
