Genetics and Molecular Medicine

The Division consists of 4 Departments, all of which focus on investigation of the molecular basis of human disease, and how such knowledge can be applied to improved diagnosis and therapy. The Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics aims to identify genes, their functions, and variants, implicated in both Mendelian and complex common disorders, with a strong emphasis on translational medicine.

Entry requirements

Minimum 2.1 Honours degree in biochemistry, genetics and related disciplines. A 2.2 degree may be considered only where applicants also offer a Master's degree with merit or above. If the applicant's 1st language is not English, English language requirements also apply. Please note that research programmes within the School of Medicine may sometimes require a criminal conviction check depending on the particular topic/method of research.

Course modules

Recent studies have focussed on aspects of breast cancer development; susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis; and molecular characterisation of the pathogenesis of the vascular disorder known as pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Sponsorship information

A small number of studentships for specific named projects, funded either by external funding agencies such as the research councils (eg MRC), or charitable bodies, are usually available; these usually provide a stipend and the payment of tuition fees at the home/EU rate; self-funded students may also apply to study a particular research project.
