Late Antique and Byzantine Studies

This course provides advanced study of the history and culture of the Eastern Mediterranean world, from the foundation of Constantinople in 330 to the fall of the Byzantine empire in 1453; there is a wide range of modules in research skills (languages; palaeography; epigraphy; papyrology) and history; literature; culture; philosophy; and theology.

Entry requirements

A minimum 2.1 Honours degree in a humanities subject with a significant element relating to classical antiquity or the Middle Ages; graduates of Greek/Cypriot universities should have a GPA in the BA of 7.5; if students do not have a formal qualification in any ancient language they may still be considered if they take at least a basic course before the start of their MA studies.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by coursework and/or examination plus a compulsory dissertation.
