Research strengths include all periods of French literature; modern French history; and politics; Francophone literature; and French thought; there are several active research seminars attended by graduate students as well as staff: A medieval seminar, a critical theory seminar and regular departmental seminars; the department provides training and individual guidance on research methods, writing research proposals and applying for funding.

Entry requirements

Minimum 2.1 Honours degree in French or in a combined Honours degree including French, followed by a taught Master's degree; applications from candidates with other qualifications may be considered if relevant experience or equivalent qualifications can be demonstrated.

Course modules

Recent projects include: Medieval Francophone literary culture outside France; deviant speech in the early modern period; Horace in the Eighteenth century; world history as world court: the theatrical origin of human rights; sexuality under the restoration; casts, imprints and traces in modern and contemporary art; the cinematographic imaginary in Proust; a future for Alcibiades: Male Homosexuality after Foucault, Lacan and Bersani; the politics of racism in France; colonial education.

2 full AHRC studentships attached to the programme (home/EU applicants); the deadline for AHRC funding applications is 1 February 2011; Graduate School and School of Arts and Humanities studentships and bursaries (including for overseas applicants).
