This programme gives trainees practical and theoretical ideas on the teaching of English as well as modelling ways in which English can be taught in the classroom.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree, or a qualification recognised as equivalent by the University of London. Knowledge and understanding of the subject to be taught. GCSE grade C or above, or an equivalent qualification, in English language and mathematics. Applicants without these English or mathematics qualifications at the time they apply may be considered, but they must obtain them, or pass an equivalent test set by King's, before the course starts. Candidates offered a place on a PGCE course must gain clearance from the Criminal Records Bureau. All entrants must meet the Secretary of State's requirements for physical and mental fitness for teaching as detailed in the DfES Circular 4/99.

Assessment methods

Students will be assessed continuously throughout the course and given feedback to help develop. In order to pass the PGCE students must meet all of the Teachers' Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status and satisfactorily complete a series of assignments. In order to pass the PGCE at Master's level students need to pass the 2 Master's level assignments at this level. These are the subject studies assignment, and school experience report.

Sponsorship information

Those with a 1st class undergraduate degree receive �9000; those with a 2.1 receive �5000; those with a 2.2 are not eligible to receive a bursary.
