Contemporary European Philosophy

This programme offers students an international and inter-linguistic orientation in current philosophical work. Students undertake detailed study of recent influential texts, undertaken as far as possible in the original languages and a major contemporary thinker of their choice.

Entry requirements

Upper 2nd or 1st Class Honours, or the equivalent undergraduate degree in philosophy or a related subject; minimum of a good A-Level in French or equivalent; applicants with other kinds of qualifications are considered on an individual basis; international applicants require IELTS of 6.5 overall, with at least 5.5 in all elements.

Course modules

Modules include: Contemporary european philosophies; special study; dissertation; plus a range of choice modules from Kingston and the University of paris 8 (saint-denis) including: art theory: modernism, avant-garde, contemporary; freud and lacan; german critical theory; hegel and his legacy; kant and his legacy; kant and the aesthetic tradition; marx and his legacy; nietzsche and heidegger; plasticity and form; recent French philosophy; recent italian philosophy; romantic philosophy of art; topics in modern european philosophy.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through coursework, including short exercises, essays, independent study, research skills workshops and a 20,000-word dissertation.
