This course covers a broad range of musical interests. The course aims to: develop a broad range of musical and critical skills and knowledge; stimulate an inquiring mind; encourage initiative, creativity, critical evaluation and independence of thought; develop a systematic understanding of relevant musical knowledge and a critical awareness of contemporary issues in music; and provide knowledge of research practices in music, enabling students to undertake a substantial individual research/composition project.

Entry requirements

At least 2.2 Honours degree in music; an essay may be required; a folio of compositions may be required; relevant experiential learning may be taken in lieu of a degree in music; interview; where English is not the applicants 1st language, they must have an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules include: Major project; researching music. Options include: advanced production of popular music; composing and marketing popular music; constructing music education in the UK; contemporary sonic arts practice; international music education: psychology, culture and philosophy; sound design; techniques and technology for composing for film and television; the philosophy and psychology of musical performance; current debates in music education; jazz studies; live performance; special study; the psychology of music; the studio musician.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through coursework; dissertation, composition, recital.
