Clinical Applications of Psychology

This course provides a thorough grounding in current psychological theory and research informing the understanding of mental health problems. Students also gain advanced knowledge of the principles and evidence base of effective treatment interventions aimed at reducing mental health problems and enhancing wellbeing. The course covers: theories of adult and child psychopathology; the bio-psychosocial aspects of health and illness; positive psychology and wellbeing; the evidence base for psychological and behavioural change interventions in mental health; and professional issues relevant to clinical practitioners. Students also acquire basic skills in counselling and knowledge of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) theory and practice.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree in psychology or equivalent; or a mental health qualification or other suitable professional experience; mathematics to grade C or above at GCSE level; knowledge of statistics and research methods skills up to 3rd year undergraduate psychology level or equivalent is required; applicants whose 1st language is not English must have an IELTS score of 6.5 with 7.0 in writing or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules include: Clinical applications of psychology; professional practice; psychology dissertation; psychopathology across the life span; research design and analysis.
