Environmental Law and Sustainability

The course provides a specialist programme of study in the fields of national, regional (European Union) and international environmental law regimes. Specific emphasis is given to the most prominent challenges, such as climate change, and the rapidly changing regulatory and policy issues that emanate from them. The programme also incorporates links with other disciplines such as human rights, trade, commerce, economics and international development in the southern hemisphere.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree in law (usually a 2.2 degree or above), or a joint Honours degree (2.2 or above) where the major component is in law e.g. accounting and law or combined studies; a graduate Diploma in law (CPE), legal practice course or bar vocational course; a qualification as a solicitor or barrister; applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with 5.5 in reading, listening, speaking and writing.

Course modules

Modules include: Environmental law and regulation; European Union environmental law; international environmental law and sustainability; international law and economic development; dissertation; legal research theory and methodology. Option modules: biodiversity and conservation; economic sustainability; sustainable environmental management; the challenge of climate change; water resources management; advocacy; alternative dispute resolution; arbitration; civil liberties and human rights; civil procedure; company law; EU competition law; EU immigration law; evidence and arbitral awards; family mediation; individual employment law; insolvency law; international economic law; international environmental law and sustainability; international sale of goods and e-commerce; labour law in the global economy; law of international trade; legal aspects of business finance; migration theory, policy and legal practice; refugee law and forced migration; termination of employment; the single European market; UK immigration law.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through written coursework; examinations; dissertation.
