Secondary Education (Mathematics)

The mathematics specialist pathway has a very practical focus. It enables students to teach mathematics up to key stage 3, mathematics to GCSE, and some aspects of A-level mathematics. The course also aims to develop professional skills to help students gain employment in a secondary school and continue with their professional development. It also provides students with a rigorous training in all aspects of being a secondary school teacher. 2/3 of course time is spent working in schools. The main emphasis is on planning work for pupils, planning for good discipline/control and developing skills as a teacher. Successful completion of this course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) subject to satisfactory performance in skills tests.

Entry requirements

A 2.2 Honours degree in a subject related to mathematics (at least 50 per cent of the degree content needs to be relevant to mathematics). GCSE (A-C): English language and mathematics; applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5.
