Professional Studies in Education

This programme is designed for graduate educational practitioners, in the early stages of their career and/or working towards middle and senior leadership roles. It is ideal if you would like to develop your career and extend your skills, knowledge and expertise through further work-based practice and academic study. This programme enables you to deepen your knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning and to reflect on and improve existing practice. You will explore a range of theoretical perspectives, subjecting these to critical scrutiny, drawing where appropriate on practical knowledge and experience.

Entry requirements

Graduates; or candidates with other relevant qualifications; or at least 1 year of professional experience; direct entry to phase 2 (PgDip level) or phase 3 (MA level) of the programme is possible for suitably qualified candidates; applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS of 6.5.

Course modules

Modules include: Advanced professional practice pathway: policy and professional practice; researching professional learning; group study; team research and presentation; understanding personal professional practice; working with others; autistic spectrum pathway: support and services; school placement and provision for inclusive education; structured teaching programmes and strategies; the curriculum, assessment and public examinations; the legislative framework; understanding the autistic spectrum; early years education pathway: curriculum and practice; development and management project; organisational context 1; organisational context 2; organisational context 3; principles and practice; inclusion and special educational needs pathway: providing a context: definitions, legislation and codes of practice for special educational needs and disabilities; making provision: curriculum planning, teaching and personalising learning to ensure that every child matters; applying good practice: managing behaviour and supporting pupils with specific learning difficulties; working together across children's services: building brighter futures for all children.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through the submission of oral and written assignments. Formative assessment is used to prepare for academic study and research projects.
