Exercise for Health
This programme is designed to address this issue not just to patch up the problem, but to also help change social perceptions and action policy in addition to addressing the underlying theme of prevention. The pervading theme is exercise, its physiology and prescription in various social settings and health contexts. The course enables students to develop an informed, reflective and critically analytical approach to the rapidly changing area of exercise for health. The course incorporates social marketing and policy issues. There is a strong emphasis on exercise physiology and psychology. By its nature this course is a forerunner in its field, bridging the gap between sports science elite and the general population. Most of the sessions are classroom based with the exception of several laboratory sessions exploring field skills when measuring and dealing with fatigue; this is therefore not a sports studies oriented course or curriculum.
A 2nd Class Honours degree in a science or healthcare field; and a background in physiology; and a biology A-level; applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS of 6.5 overall with 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in reading, listening and speaking.
Modules include: Critical thinking for exercise for health; exercise prescription; exercise through the life stages; psychology for exercise and health; research methods; research management and quantitative data analysis; research project. Option modules: cognitive behaviour approaches in health; managing fatigue (implications for exercise); pulmonary rehabilitation; pain management.
Assessment is through exams, oral and poster presentations, dissertation and essays.
