Geographical Information Systems and Science

This course enables students to gain a high level of competency in the principles of geographical information science and the use of geotechnology; they are able to routinely use professional software for data acquisition, handling, exploration and mapping.

Entry requirements

A 2nd Class Honours degree containing 1 or more aspects from the geographical information system; geographical; earth; environmental; computer or biological sciences as the major field(s) of study; or extensive work experience or career development in the field of geographical information systems in lieu of these qualifications; applicants may be interviewed; applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS of 6.5 overall with 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in reading, listening and speaking.

Course modules

Modules include: Contemporary issues in geographical information; digital mapping; spatial databases; research methods and data analysis; research methods; dissertation. Options include: remote sensing; geovisualisation; geodemographic analysis; spatial databases; mobile geographic information systems; geographical information systems and health; geographical information systems programming; geographical information systems and hazards; location enabled web applications; location enabled web services.
