Biomedical Science (Haematology and Medical Microbiology)
This course aims to give students an in-depth understanding of disease processes and complement this with the study of an elected specialist discipline within pathology (haematology or medical microbiology); academic knowledge is linked to the practical applications of biomedical science particularly in relation to modern diagnostic methods; students are familiarised with: the theoretical and practical aspects of molecular medicine used in research and hospital laboratories; the molecular basis of immunological mechanisms; and cellular mechanisms of disease, the physiological manifestations and implications to public health. As well as this students earn about the principles and practice of laboratory management in biomedical science and they have the opportunity to specialise.
An Honours degree or equivalent in a biologically-related discipline or professional experience; applicants whose 1st language is not English must have an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent with 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in reading, listening and speaking.
Modules include: Molecular medicine; immunology; research and organisation in biomedical science; biology of disease; research project; haemostatis and thrombosis; blood transfusion; haemopoiesis and anaemia; control of infectious diseases; microbiology in clinical practice; structure, taxonomy and characteristics of micro-organisms of medical importance.
Assessment is through essays, practical reports, critical analysis, poster presentations, written exam and research project.
