English Language and Literary Studies
The programme is ideal for you if you would like to combine your studies of English Language with the study of literature and literary theory. This programme is taught jointly by the Department of Linguistics and English Language and the Department of English and Creative Writing, allowing a great deal of flexibility to follow your own interests.
A good 2nd Class Honours degree or its equivalent, in a relevant subject area. IELTS: 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in listening and speaking and at least 6.5 in reading and writing) or equivalent.
Modules include: Bilingualism; corpus linguistics; critical discourse analysis; English grammar: a cognitive approach; forensic linguistics; introduction to discourse studies (prerequisite for critical discourse analysis); language, literacies and digital communication; learning and teaching in digitally mediated spaces; pragmatics; sociolinguistics; plus literary studies modules.
Assessment methods include: Coursework and dissertation.
UK/EU applicants may be eligible for AHRC or ESRC studentships; department's own Geoffrey Leech Scholarship Fund welcomes applications from UK/EU students.
