This programem focuses on the description and explanation of the English language, including its structure, functions and social contexts of use. English language here refers to the study of English as a foreign language, not the practice of English. It is designed to appeal to a wide audience (including U.K. teachers of the English Language A level).
Upper 2nd Class Honours degree, or its equivalent, in a relevant subject area. IELTS: 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in listening and speaking and at least 6.5 in reading and writing) or equivalent.
Modules include: Corpus linguistics; discourse analysis; English grammar; history of English; investigating spoken English; stylistics.
Assessment methods include: Coursework and dissertation.
UK/EU students may be eligible for AHRC or ESRC studentships; department has its own Geoffrey Leech Scholarship Fund, for which applications are welcomed from UK/EU students.
