This programem focuses on the description and explanation of the English language, including its structure, functions and social contexts of use. English language here refers to the study of English as a foreign language, not the practice of English. It is designed to appeal to a wide audience (including U.K. teachers of the English language A level).

Entry requirements

Upper 2nd Class Honours degree, or its equivalent, in a relevant subject area. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum 6.0 in listening and speaking and 6.5 in reading and writing) or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: English grammar; corpus linguistics; investigating spoken English; stylistics; stylistics; history of English; discourse analysis; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include: Coursework and dissertation.

Sponsorship information

UK/EU students may be eligible for AHRC or ESRC studentships; department has its own Geoffrey Leech Scholarship Fund, for which applications are welcomed from UK/EU students.
