Primary Education (Lower Primary, 3-7)
This course offers training for primary teachers with a specialism in the 3-7 age range. Students study planning, teaching and curriculum assessment in both the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. Applicants also develop their understanding of the role of the subject specialist in a chosen curriculum subject. This course emphasises playful, experiential learning and teaching, literacy (including phonics), mathematics and personal, social and emotional development at both Key Stages.
Undergraduate degree 2.1 or above in a subject relevant to early childhood education or able to demonstrate a relevant level 3 background e.g. BTEC in childhood studies, A-level psychology.
Professional studies: early childhood (20 credits); critical issues in early years (20 credits); playful learning and playful pedagogies (20 credits); early years foundation stage: curriculum and pedagogy (20 credits); key stage 1: curriculum and pedagogy (20 credits); developing as a subject specialist (20 credits); professional practice (non-credit bearing).
