Advanced Diabetes Educator (Children, Young People and Families)

This course provides a combination of health, education and psychological principles related to diabetes self-management education. Students develop the expertise to become an educator who can communicate complex clinical, psychosocial and dietetic information to children and families with diverse needs and learning abilities.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have at least a 2nd Class Honours degree in the cognate subject of health and be working in a children's diabetes centre, in a specialist practitioner role. All applicants will have Nursing and Midwifery Council 1st level registration (Child) or Health and Care Professions Council registration as a dietitian or psychologist; or recognised professional registration in home country if not from the UK. All suitable candidates will be invited to attend an interview with the course team at which they will be required to submit their professional portfolio with a summary of their achievements in specialist diabetes practice; including evidence of recent professional development in children's and young people's diabetes. All applications must be accompanied by evidence of employee support and applicants will need to secure a suitable practice placement and a suitably experienced practice teacher/mentor in order to undertake the course. Satisfactory health and enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course. IELTS:7.0 with no skill below 7.0.

Active pedagogy: empowering children and young people with diabetes and their families; psychological aspects of living with diabetes for children, young people and their families; food, health and diabetes: working with children, young people and their families; clinical management of diabetes in children and young people; research methods; dissertation for advanced diabetes educators.
