Primary Education (5-11 with Mathematics Specialism)

This is a professionally oriented programme that enables you to engage with a wide range of educational issues. It is designed to develop the teaching and learning role through reflective practice. The programme will provide additional opportunities to enhance your understanding of the teaching of maths in the primary school and a strong focus on your understanding of progression in learning within this subject area.

Entry requirements

Normal entry requirement for the Primary PGCE is an Honours degree at 2.2 or above in any national curriculum or relevant subject , GCSE English, maths and science at grade C or above. In order to be able to fulfil the requirements of the course you will need to be able to demonstrate prior experience/knowledge of work/work experience/voluntary work in a primary setting. An offer of a place is subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure Certificate. All entrants to Initial Teacher Training (ITT) courses are required to pass a fitness test to train to teach health assessment as part of the entry conditions to the programme.

Course modules

Stage 1 is based at Leeds Trinity University and establishes the foundation of knowledge and understanding necessary for you to benefit from school-based training. This training comprises subject studies and professional studies. Stage 2 is school-based and seeks to provide the basic skills necessary for you to function as a teacher. Stage 3 is school-based (in a different school to Stage 2) where your skills will be refined and your ability to transfer competence from one school to another will be tested.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through graded coursework assignments and school-based training. There are no examinations. Assessments are designed to enable you to critically reflect on practice. At the end of phase 1, a portfolio of evidence including reflections on the phase 1 work and an essay is to be submitted. School-based training is to be completed successfully to proceed onto the next phase. At the end of the course, a standards evidence base is to be completed including reflection on Phase 2 and 3 university-based training, school-based training and personal study. School-based training is to be completed successfully at each phase.
