Secondary Education (Business Studies)
This course offers Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) (FHEQ Level 6) initial teacher training as well as the option to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education qualification (PGCert) (FHEQ Level 7).
Students require GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C or above. (We offer our own internal Mathematics test to those who have a conditional place on the course but who do not already have GCSE Maths). To have passed the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy. A good honours degree (2.2 or above) with a significant proportion of Business, Management, Marketing, Accounting, Finance and/or Economics.
Stage 1 is based at the University and establishes the foundation of knowledge and understanding necessary to benefit from school-based training. Training comprises subject studies, professional studies and the option to start Master's level modules. Stage 2 is school-based and seeks to provide the basic skills necessary for to function as a teacher. Stage 3 is school-based (in a different school to stage 2) where a skills will be refined and a ability to transfer competence from 1 school to another will be tested.
During Stage 1 knowledge and understanding is assessed by focused written assignments. During Stages 2and 3 progress against the Teachers� Standards is assessed through performance as a teacher in schools. Classroom teachers evaluate lesson plans, observe lessons and review marking. Self-review and attendance at training activities support development.
