Secondary Education (Geography)

This programme is for graduates who wish to teach Geography in secondary schools.

Entry requirements

You'll need GCSEs in English and Maths at grade C or above. (We offer our own internal Mathematics test to those who have a conditional place on the course but who do not already have GCSE Maths). To have passed the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy; a good Honours degree (2.2 or above) with a significant proportion of Geography. 3rd class degrees will be considered if relevant school-based voluntary or paid work experience has been gained. In addition to the above essential entry requirements, successful applicants also tend to have: recent experience working with secondary-age children; recent experience of your subject in a secondary school; experience as a trainer/teacher/mentor to others. An offer of a place is subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure Certificate. All entrants to Initial Teacher Training (ITT) courses are required to be declared as �fit to train to teach�, you will be asked to complete a health assessment as part of the entry conditions to the programme.

Course modules

The course comprises of 3 stages, each lasting 12 weeks: in stage 1 trainees are based in the lead school where they are taught the theoretical side of teaching by the Lead tutor. This includes how to plan lessons, units of work, classroom management techniques, assessment methods and much more. Stages 2 and 3:the 2 teaching placements are completed in different schools and allow trainee�s to experience what it is like to be a full time teacher in a secondary school.

Assessment methods

During stage1 knowledge and understanding is assessed by written assignments. During stages 2 and 3 progress against the National Standards are assessed by observing performance as a teacher in schools. Classroom teachers evaluate lesson plans, observe lessons and review marking. Self-review and attendance at training activities will support development.
