This course focuses upon the study of literature within its historical context; the programme offers a unique opportunity for postgraduate students to develop expertise in archival research, whilst at the same time honing the theoretical and critical skills necessary for the successful analysis and interpretation of literary and historical sources;the course offers the opportunity to study major authors of English Literature such as William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens

Entry requirements

A 1st Class or upper 2nd Class Honours degree. Applications from students who do not hold a 1st or 2.1 Honours degree (or equivalent) will be asked to demonstrate potential to achieve a Masters award via a sample of academic writing and interview before an offer is made. Please note that a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is required for students where they are required to visit settings other than their own. For students whose 1st language is not English there is a language requirement of IELTS 6.5 overall (reading 6, writing 6), TOEFL IBT 87, or other equivalent recognised English language qualification.

Course modules

Modules include: Handiwork: from pen to print; theories of literature and culture; dissertation preparation; research dissertation. Option modules: early modern popular culture; exeunt omnes: Shakespeare offstage; the rise of the novel; case studies in nineteenth-century literature; American modernism; the literature of the first world war: gender, class and conflict; culture and diversity in early 20th century Irish literature; new literature in English.

Assessment methods

Assessment is done individually; assessment methods vary but generally include essays, presentations and a dissertation.
