Liverpool Hope University
Secondary Education (Computer Science and ICT)
Computing has recently been recognised as a fundamental subject, which all pupils should be taught. Given that it has previously been a minority subject in a small number of schools, this expansion will require suitably qualified teachers as a matter of urgency. Tutors are dedicated to individual student support and to working closely with partners in local schools. The PGCE (Secondary) computer science with ICT programme comprises a fully integrated course of initial professional development, subject-specific pedagogy and school-based learning which encourages student teachers to apply their theoretic understanding to practical situations.
Candidates must have a 2.2 Honours degree or above containing at least 50 percent of relevant subject content; GCSE English and mathematics grade C or above or equivalent; experience in a mainstream secondary state school. It is a government requirement that students take the numeracy and literacy skills tests as part of the application process. Since the field of knowledge underpinning this course is so diverse, it is inevitable that applicants will have gaps in their own knowledge. Graduates of related disciplines, including sciences, should not be discouraged from applying. Applications from those with degrees not in computer science with ICT but with appropriate work based experience are also encouraged to apply. Whilst it is desirable that school experience has been gained before applying, this is not essential but applicants need to demonstrate awareness of current school practices and curricula. If invited for interview, candidates will undertake a short literacy test. Any offer of a place on the programme is made conditional on satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service and a satisfactory fitness to teach declaration.
