Ranked in the top 400 universities in the world, LJMU offers you a supportive, flexible academic and research environment, well-structured postgraduate programmes and round-the-clock access to extensive resources. We have over 180 years’ experience educating students in a wide range of disciplines, spanning the arts, humanities, education, health, science and technology and all of our postgraduate programmes are taught by academics actively involved in research or consultancy projects.

We have highly-effective relationships with a wide-range of organisations across the North West region and beyond, including councils, NHS trusts, charities, community and youth groups, schools, environmental groups, arts and culture companies, tourism bodies and leisure providers. These partnerships are crucial in helping our postgraduate students forge links with key contacts working in their specialist fields.

Thanks to our extensive links with leading arts, cultural and other organisations across Liverpool and beyond, we are also able to offer students free gym membership plus exclusive events and work-related learning opportunities.

Postgraduate study

LJMU offers you an extensive range of CPD courses, certificates, diplomas, teacher training programmes and taught masters degrees specifically designed to enhance your professional credentials, specialist expertise and career prospects. We also offer Professional Doctorates, an alternative to a PhD for staff in organisations who want to research and develop their professional practice at doctorate level.

Completing a postgraduate qualification at LJMU can help transform your future career prospects. According to the latest figures, 98 per cent of our postgraduates are in work or further study within six months of graduating. Of those in work, 96% are in professional employment, that’s 4% above the sector average. What’s more our postgraduates can, on average, earn up to 40% more than someone with an undergraduate degree.

If you are interested in carrying out your own research, LJMU offers supervision by nationally and internationally-acclaimed academics across all disciplines and many MPhil/PhD places come with funding attached too.

The results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework demonstrated the world-leading quality of our research, with 96% of our research rated as international quality or better. We have a reputation for delivering pioneering research that is extending our knowledge and understanding across a diverse range of areas from neuroscience to engineering and public health to criminology. We strongly encourage multi-disciplinary research and actively support collaboration with institutions across the world.

LJMU is ranked in the top 25 English universities for PhD completion rates, and research students form the bedrock of our vibrant research community. Supervision is available in each of our Faculties and over 550 students are currently completing MPhil or PhDs at the University.

Our Libraries provide access to all the resources and student support services you’ll need to succeed in your postgraduate studies. With 24/7 opening hours during semesters, extensive print and online collections plus designated postgraduate study areas, you can plan your study time to fit in around your other commitments.

Our Student Advice and Wellbeing Team can give you advice and guidance on everything from your physical and mental health, to accommodation, money management and help with childcare. Many of our postgraduate students join LJMU after a significant time away from formal education. To help ensure that all students get the most out of their university experience, we run workshops on various aspects of postgraduate study, such as academic writing, effective reading skills, exam and revision skills, report writing, IT skills and much more. Plus we run a free Counselling Service and have an on-campus Assessment Room for students with disabilities and additional support needs.

Plus you’ll find Starbucks cafes, social spaces and extensive IT facilities in each of our three campuses.
