Electrical Power and Control Engineering

This MSc degree programme provides a progression point from undergraduate courses in the area of Electrical Engineering, and further development for suitably qualified individuals in the field of Electrical Power and Control Engineering. It aims to meet the growing demand for electrical power engineers in the energy, automotive, and process industries where graduates will be involved in the design and development of electrical systems, such as those found in hybrid vehicles, cooling systems and aircraft actuators etc. as well as the generation, distribution, regulation and conversion of electrical power. The programme is supported by research activities of national and international significance, conducted by the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Research Centre in the areas of microelectronic devices and reliability, multiphase electric machines and drives, and control systems. The existing expertise and laboratories are well aligned with new sources of energy, green energy and the energy saving industry, in particular with wind power electricity generation where wider penetration of remote off-shore wind farm installations is expected in near future, where multi-phase systems have many advantages.

Course modules

Core modules: modelling and control of electric machines and drives; control systems; dynamic systems simulation; digital control; power systems modelling and analysis; alternative energy systems; modelling with matlab and Simulink; MSC project. Option modules: operations research; safety reliability; project management; programming for engineering; lab view; professional and leadership skills.

Assessment methods

You will gain knowledge on this course through lectures and directed student-centred learning, such as case studies. You will also have the opportunity to complete open-ended reports and project work to demonstrate your understanding of topics. Assessment is through a combination of coursework in the form of case study reports and assignment submissions and, where appropriate, short class tests. Some modules also include testing of problem solving skills through a combination of unseen written examinations.
