Liverpool John Moores University
Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Practice
The core 60 credit module, independent research and dissertation, begins with 24 workshop hours dedicated to the initial preparation required to conduct an ethical, reliable and valid independent research enquiry, consistent with your professional experience and psychotherapy research interest. The remainder of the programme follows a self-directed research study, supported by individual tutorials where you consolidate and synthesise your prior theoretical and conceptual learning with your professional practice and current research enquiry. Following a learning agreement with your tutor and subsequent ethical approval from the LJMU Research Ethics Committee, you will embark on your research activity and follow through from the recruitment phase to analysis and discussion of your findings and completion of the research project. The dissertation is the written presentation of your robust and critically argued enquiry which reflects the research integrity and its applicability to the field of counselling and psychotherapy.
You must already be a qualified and practising therapist with 120 M level credits from a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and/or Psychotherapy. Additionally, you are expected to hold an undergraduate degree, although consideration is given to mature students with experience and expertise in a related field who also have acquired the 120 PG Diploma credits.
Core modules: Counselling competency; client centred theory; personal development (self and society); ethical practice in counselling and psychotherapy; theory of counselling and psychotherapy; counselling practice (developing expertise); personal development (self in relationship); ethical research in counselling and psychotherapy; independent research and dissertation.
