Graphic Design

The course builds on the design skills, knowledge and appreciation gained through degree studies and/or professional practice in graphic design, typography or a related field; students are encouraged to explore and develop individual approach to the production and communication of messages.

Entry requirements

Overseas students must have IELTS 7 or equivalent; if applying directly from degree course, without experience of professional practice, applicants must be able to demonstrate good knowledge of graphic design practice supported by a good degree.

Course modules

The course is divided into 4 stages: Stage 1: projects covering fundamental design principles related to graphic design; multi-disciplinary perspectives; and design methodologies utilising theoretical and historical contexts for work explored; begin to develop research proposal for major self-initiated project; workshops in areas such as letterpress, printmaking and photography and visits to museums, galleries and design studios; stage 2: sets projects which explore current design issues and methodologies; students investigate issues in contemporary design practice such as design authorship and social engagement, through a process of research, experimentation and the practical testing of ideas; stages 3 and 4: intensive exploration of the ideas developed and form the basis of major self-initiated project; industrial collaboration and mentorship allows testing of ideas in practice, whilst developing project; work culminates in the presentation of major project and supporting report, alternatively students may submit a thesis with supporting practical project work.
