The Human Resource Management MA is of particular interest to those professionals who wish to further their careers and assume senior human resource (HR) positions. The course is suited both to those already working in HR (at any level) as well as those who aspire to do so. Successful completion of the course, not only gives you the award of the MA HRM but also gives you the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's (CIPD) Advanced Level Diploma, CIPD Associate Membership and the opportunity to apply to upgrade to CIPD Chartered status. This programme is for practicing human resource professionals seeking to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of human resource activities. It's designed for human resource management generalists and is intended to enable you to identify and make effective use of a range of methods and techniques for providing human resources for an organisation and ensuring their optimum utilisation.

Entry requirements

You will be required to have already be working in human resources, and possess a lower second (2:2) honours degree (or above), or an equivalent professional qualification. Alternatively learners have considerable relevant professional experience (eg at least 10 years in human resources and currently in a senior role with staff). All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants who require a Tier 4 student visa may need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS 6.

Course modules

Modules include: Leading, Managing and Developing people; Contextualising Management; Research Methods in Human Resource Management. Optional A (students choose three from the following): Human Resource Management (Resourcing and Talent Management); Employment Law and Practice; Managing Employment Relations in Contemporary Organisations; Employee Engagement; Learning and Talent Development. Option B (students choose from): Strategic International Human Resource Management; Diversity and Inclusion: Policy, Practice and the Law. Students may elect to take Cross-Cultural Management (20 credits, delivered during the day only) in place of one of these subject related option choices.

Assessment methods

Assessment is both formative and summative. It is designed to appeal to, and test, students from wide range of traditions. Methods are varied and include assignments written in report and essay format, comparative analyses, case studies, a skills development portfolio, presentations and group work. There are also two exams. The exams take place only in the first semester and are required by the CIPD across all approved programmes. Exam briefing is given is given to help prepare students for these assessments. There is also a dissertation which carries 60 credits. The dissertation requires students to conduct a piece of empirical research on a topic of their choice (and approved by their tutor).
