Common Professional Exam (GDL)

A highly rated conversion course for non-law graduates who wish to progress to the Legal Practice Course (LPC) to become solicitors or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) to become barristers. Covering all the foundations of legal knowledge as required by the legal professional bodies, this highly successful course has a longstanding reputation. You'll also be provided with the opportunity to learn advocacy skills in our mock courtroom and there's an active mooting and debating society. You may choose your own title for your research dissertation, subject to approval, which gives you the early opportunity to specialise in an area of particular interest to you.

Entry requirements

You will be required to have a lower second (2:2) honours undergraduate degree or above. Applicants who do not hold a UK undergraduate degree must obtain a Certificate of Academic Standing from either the Solicitors Regulation Authority or the Bar Council. All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. Applicants who require a Tier 4 student visa may need to provide a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS with a score of 7 or more.

Course modules

The seven taught modules are the foundation subjects prescribed by the Joint Academic Stage Board on behalf of the Law Society and General Council of the Bar: Criminal Law, Obligations A (Contract), Obligations B (Tort), Property Law A (Land Law), Property Law B (Equity and Trusts), UK Public Law and Human Rights, Law of the European Union, and Eight Area of Legal Study (Dissertation).

Assessment methods

Assessment includes an examination in each of the seven foundation subjects (each worth 10 per cent of the total assessment), a research essay in a legal area entirely of the student's own choice, four short essays covering different areas of the foundation subjects, and a case and statute analysis exercise.
