Early Years Education
The course is designed to enable students to develop their understanding of the role of the early years and the primary teacher within the broad field of education. There are opportunities to extend their knowledge, develop their classroom practice and examine the underlying principles and values that inform current debates around educational issues. Through evaluation and reflection students are supported in developing a clear understanding of the links between theory and practice.
UK degree grade 2.2 or equivalent, GCSE English grade C or above (or equivalent), GCSE maths grade C or above (or equivalent) GCSE science grade C or above (or equivalent), QTS skills tests in English and mathematics. A valid Disclosure and Barring Service disclosure certificate and confirmation of fitness to teach (London Metropolitan University health check) you will be advised to apply for these after an offer is made. Before you can be permitted to enrol to this course you must take and pass the QTS skills tests as required by the NCTL. If you have not already passed this test this will be made a condition of your offer with a strict deadline for completion. In practice London Met would prefer these results are confirmed before offering an interview. Prior to interview London Met strongly recommends that you have a minimum of 10 working days recent experience (within the past year) in a school. In the interview your understanding of current teaching practice and issues in schools will be assessed.
Curriculum studies; PiP sessions.
Coursework consists of a reflective portfolio comprising several formative patches that are completed throughout the year, ending with one synoptic piece of writing plus an educational research assignment, which are completed in the last 2 weeks of the PGCE, where students are given the opportunity to explore an educational issue covered within the professionalism and inclusive practice (PiP) module in relation to children�s rights.
