Early Childhood Studies

The Early Childhood Studies (MA) is designed for people working within the early childhood field including those who may not be working directly with children but are involved in developing the early childhood workforce, such as further education lecturers and local authority advisors. The course draws on current debates in early childhood and promotes a deeper understanding of the theories and policies that underpin your work. It offers you an opportunity to advance your knowledge, understanding and professional practice through engagement with current research and thinking in early childhood. It also involves a reflection on and analysis of your own professional practice. A commitment to equality, diversity, social justice and advocacy are themes central to this programme. The course is delivered by distance learning using an interactive online platform and individual academic support from tutors. As well as academic content the interactive online platform includes podcasts, video, online discussions and links to identified reading, either as scanned chapters or through access to our wide range of online books and academic journals.

Entry requirements

You will be required to have a relevant lower second honours degree (or above) and currently working within the early childhood workforce. Some of the modules require an observational visit to a setting offering care and education for children from birth to seven years. Where you are not working directly with children you'll need to be able to commit to this component of the programme. All students are interviewed, but importance is also placed on the statement of application. All applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language.

Course modules

Year 1 modules include: Distinct Approaches in Early Childhood Education and Care, Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood. Year 2 modules include: Foundations of Being, Equality and Inclusion in Early Childhood. Year 3 modules include: Research Methods and Dissertation.

Assessment methods

You'll be assessed through coursework as well as a dissertation.
