This programme aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to make valuable contributions to both epidemiological research and public health; it covers both communicable and non-communicable disease epidemiology, and has a substantive statistical component.

Entry requirements

2nd Class Honours degree in a subject appropriate to the course or in another discipline which has included suitable preliminary training, or previous education and experience without a 1st degree, which satisfies the university that the applicant has obtained a level of academic proficiency equivalent to a 1st degree. A student should also show evidence of numeracy skills (e.g. A level Mathematics or Statistics or a module with a good mark in their university degree).

Course modules

Core modules include: clinical trials; epidemiology in practice; extended epidemiology; statistics for epidemiology and population health; study design (writing a proposal); statistical methods in epidemiology. Optional modules include: demographic methods; molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases; applied communicable disease control; control of reproductive tract infections / sexually transmitted infections; current issues in safe motherhood and perinatal health; epidemiology of non-communicable diseases; medical anthropology and public health; modelling and the dynamics of infectious diseases; nutrition in emergencies; social epidemiology; spatial epidemiology in public health; tropical environmental health; environmental epidemiology; epidemiology and control of communicable diseases; ethics, public health and human rights; genetic epidemiology; globalisation and health; nutrition related chronic disease; platforms of care for mental disorders; advanced statistical methods in epidemiology; AIDS; integrated vector management; principles and practice of public health.
