Public Health (distance learning)
This programme provides the knowledge and skills necessary to address diverse global public health issues; it covers promoting health and prevention of diseases, the provision and evaluation of treatment and care, and the investigation and control of environmental threats to health; the emphasis is on the use, development and evaluation of conceptual models, methods of analysis, and practical, effective interventions.
Applicants require: 1 year's relevant work experience plus a 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree, or the equivalent, from a university or other institution acceptable to the University of London, in 1 of the following subjects: water and sanitation; development studies; human rights; environmental studies; sociology; anthropology; psychology; geography; demography; or 1 year's relevant work experience plus another undergraduate degree provided it is in a subject appropriate to the course; applicants who do not satisfy the above requirements may still be admitted at the discretion of the School on the basis of their academic qualifications, work experience and references; applicants without English as their 1st language must show they have passed 1 of the following tests within the previous 3 years: IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 7 in written sub-test, or TOEFL paper-based test 600 or TOEFL computer-based test with a minimum of 5 in the test of written English, or TOEFL internet-based test 100 with a minimum of 24 in the test of written English.
Core modules include: basic epidemiology; basic statistics for public health and policy; introduction to health economics; principles of social research. Optional modules include: issues in public health; environment, health and sustainable development; health promotion theory; health services; health policy, process and power.
