Human Resource Management

This course aims to develop the professional capability of HRM practitioners through developing a range of skills, knowledge and understanding in leadership and HR management, including people management and development, business understanding, professional and ethical behaviour, analytical and intuitive/creative thinking, customer focus, strategic thinking and communication, to a level where a significant professional contribution to the management of HRM can be made in an organisation or sector.

Entry requirements

We welcome students from any background or academic discipline. Two years postgraduate work experience and current employment in a HR or HR related role (recruitment, training and development, compensation and benefits etc). We will also consider applicants who are working in a management role with responsibilities for staff management. If you lack the required academic qualifications but meet the work experience requirements above you are also eligible to apply as part of the application process you will be asked to complete a written assessment based on a work-related HR issue which will be assessed by the Course Admissions team.

Course modules

Year 1: power and constraint: the strategic context; leadership and HR strategy; leadership and management skills; resourcing and talent management. Year 2: research methods for HR; managing the employment relationship; management report (8000 words) (PG dip only) plus 2 electives (subject to minimum numbers; at least one elective be taken from Group A). Electives A: managing reward; employment law. Electives B: leading and managing change; managing coaching and mentoring; leadership and management development. Year 3: dissertation (20,000 words) (only MSc).

Assessment methods

Assessment is by a mixture of individual assignments, group presentations and by examination at the end of some units.
