Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

This course has been developed to equip students with core knowledge and competencies in using cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) work with their patients; it is designed to address the challenges in assessment and treatment of a range of disorders or work with specific patients groups where CBT techniques and strategies can be adopted and used to good effect; students develop core components in CBT principles and techniques, gaining a deeper awareness of the diversity and complexity of working with a range of disorders or different patient groups.

Entry requirements

PgCert: A UK first degree (2.1 or above) in a related field and a professional qualification such as nurse, counselling psychologist, clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, doctor, or social worker, or a UK first degree (2.1 or above) in psychology or health related subject plus substantial experience of working with people suffering from depression and anxiety. Substantial experience consists of voluntary work or paid employment (part- time equivalent). Students should have been assessing or treating patients for not less than 6 months via face-to-face or telephone contact. This experience will be evidenced in a portfolio of Knowledge, Skills and Applications. We welcome international students who have the equivalent of a UK first degree (2.1 or above) in Psychology or related field and substantial experience of working with people suffering from depression and anxiety. Substantial experience consists of voluntary work or paid employment. Students should have been assessing or treating patients for not less than 6 months via face to face or telephone contact. This experience will be evidenced in a portfolio of Knowledge, Skills and Applications. International students should be proficient in English and should have passed a qualifying English examination. MSc: IAPT PgDip High Intensity course from a University that has gained accreditation for its course. Students must be eligible for BABCP accreditation.

Course modules

Year 1: PgCert in advanced CBT practice for the treatment of anxiety and depression; fundamentals of CBT; advanced CBT protocols for the assessment and treatment of anxiety; advanced CBT protocols for the assessment and treatment of depression, sociality and low self esteem. Year 2: PgDip in advanced CBT practice (resilience and positive development); classic and metacognitive approaches for the treatment of complex presentations; introduction to positive psychology; CBT interventions for the development of resilience and flourishing. Year 3: MSc in the advanced CBT practice (resilience and positive development); research in health and social care; dissertation.
