This programme recognises that leadership is multifaceted and that you need to be able to draw on the principles that underpin numerous leadership models in order to be a leader in the global sport business sector. The global environment in which the business of sport operates faces many leadership challenges. From its place in our communities, the behaviour and public conduct of athletes, the transparency and accountability of its governance, the proliferation of new revenue streams and its impact on the integrity of sport, and its symbiotic relationship with the media clearly highlights that sport requires highly capable and qualified leaders. This programme provides you with the leadership knowledge and skills necessary for middle and senior management professionals to be successful leaders in the business of sport. It draws on contemporary leadership research and theory to analyse the principles and practices of leadership to understand its multifaceted nature. Through this you will be able to identify and address the challenges and issues that are confronting sport businesses. You will participate in leadership activities and workshops that challenge the place of leadership in creating organisational success. You will benefit from learning about leadership from those who have been successful leaders across a range of industry sectors and recognise that leadership is a reflective process that facilitates continuous improvement and professional growth.
Minimum of an upper 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent in a wide range of subjects. In exceptional circumstances an applicant may be admitted to the degree who does not possess these requirements, but who has substantial relevant work experience. English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in each subtest (reading, listening, writing and speaking) or equivalent.
Modules include: Individual project, dissertation, business plan or placement; collaborative project; leadership models and practices: applications to a sport context; sport leadership retreat; sustainability and leadership for sport organisations; critically reflective leadership and sport management practice; analysing and construction of leadership for a sport context; second subject module. Optional modules include: Intellectual property; strategy and planning; sports management theory and practice.
Modules are assessed by a combination of written assignments, group exercises, presentations and time constrained assignments. Subject to your choices, there may also be exams.
