Analytical and Pharmaceutical Science

This programme is designed for graduates in chemistry or closely related disciplines who wish to contribute to drug development and analysis, which is a process that requires multidisciplinary skills. The programme comprises a broad range of modules covering the major aspects of analytical and pharmaceutical chemistry, complemented by studies in transferable and professional skills. Study areas include research methods, separation techniques, pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism, spectroscopy and structural analysis, mass spectrometry and associated techniques, drug targets, drug design and drug synthesis, sensors, innovations in analytical science and medicinal chemistry.

Entry requirements

Lower 2nd Class Honours degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a closely related subject.

Course modules

Compulsory modules, semester 1: research methods; separation techniques; pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism. Semester 2; spectroscopy and structural analysis; professional skills and dissertation; research training project; selected optional modules. Semester 1: mass spectrometry and associated techniques; drug targets, drug design and drug synthesis; sensors; semester 2; innovations in analytical science; innovations in medicinal chemistry.

Examination and coursework.
