Exercise Physiology

The programme provides students with the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the physiological, nutritional and metabolic demands of exercise and training, and their implications for participation in sport and for the maintenance of good health. This course is designed for graduates possessing a good degree in sports science or other relevant biological science, and offers study at a high level in the defined areas, with emphasis on the research literature and hands-on experience of traditional and novel laboratory techniques. It is an excellent basis for further research or for a career in exercise physiology support in both sport and health settings. Core study areas include physiology of endurance sport, sport and exercise nutrition, exercise and immunology, vocational skills in exercise physiology, neuromuscular function, quantitative research, current research in exercise physiology, laboratory techniques in sport and exercise physiology, and a research project where you have the opportunity to complete a research study under the supervision of the Academic Staff which could include the areas of muscle physiology, cardiovascular physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, risk factors for Chronic Diseases, exercise and appetite, immunology, physiological response to exercise in children and disability sport.

Entry requirements

A good upper 2nd Class (2.1) Honours degree in sports science or other relevant biological science.

Course modules

Physiology of endurance performance (compulsory); current research in exercise physiology (compulsory); laboratory techniques in exercise physiology (compulsory); quantitative research methods (compulsory) ; exercise and immunology (optional); vocational skills in exercise physiology (optional); sport and exercise nutrition (optional); neuromuscular function (optional); research project (compulsory).

Assessment methods

Modules are assessed by both coursework and examination. Coursework components may include journal article critique, abstract writing, laboratory reports, essays, presentations, case studies.
