Sport Coaching

This programme supports the professional development of sports coaches and those working in closely related fields. The programme is most suitable for experience coaches from a development of performance domain, or those who work in coach education. Core modules focus on the development of professional practice and knowledge for both coaches and coach tutor / educators. More specialist modules in the areas of psychology, physiology and biomechanics, as well as research methods and individual projects are offered.

Entry requirements

Upper 2nd Class (2.1) to Lower 2nd Class (2.2) honours degree or equivalent, plus coaching experience and a recognised coaching qualification. Applications from prospective students with exceptional vocational experience will be considered.

Course modules

The learning coach: coaching philosophy, research and practice; the coaching process: concepts and applications ; physiology for sport for coaches ; psychology of sports coaching ; research methodologies and methods ; the coaching process: pedagogy and practice ; quantitative research ; qualitative research ; coach development and mentoring; sports biomechanics for coaches ; research project.

Assessment methods

Coursework and a project thesis of 16,000-20,000 words.
