Global Media and Cultural Industries
Global media and cultural industries are important sources of employment and economic growth internationally; they are also important carriers of meaning about the world; this course focuses on the growth of these global industries and the roles that states play in governing them; the products of media and cultural industries are increasingly produced, governed, and consumed transnationally; the programme draws on the enduring strength of transnational and comparative research as well as research in the political economy of communication within the Department.
Good upper 2nd Class Honours degree in the social sciences or humanities, but applicants with appropriate professional expertise is also considered; the degree is designed to appeal to students from a variety of cultural and academic backgrounds.
Core modules: media and cultural industries; digital futures; media and cultural work; textual research techniques; production and reception analysis; dissertation. Optional modules: politics of representation; media and modernity; communication and citizenship; sex industries; global communications; popular music and modern times; media, nations, and nationalisms; digital cultures; digital economics.
Coursework plus a dissertation of 10,000 words on an agreed topic.
