Public Relations and Media Management
Underpinning PR theory and strategy, this innovative, online part-time course explores campaign planning using the latest digital and social media techniques, investigates corporate reputation management, including media law, and provides a senior practitioner view of current management and leadership practice in public relations. Specifically designed for PR professionals who want to continue their professional development by adding an academic discipline to their practical experience, the course allows students to gain a senior practitioner view of current management and leadership practice in public relations. The content allows students the ability to plan and execute campaigns using digital techniques. The course is useful to experienced professionals whose initial qualifications pre-date the development of digital communications, or who are seeking to progress to a more strategic PR management role and it also suits journalists or marketers seeking a career change qualification. The programme is taught by highly experienced tutors and industry professionals, who are able to draw upon their substantial experience in PR. Teaching is online, using interactive weekly webinars and can be undertaken from home or the workplace, and from anywhere in the UK or beyond with internet access. Students are supported by tutors and classmates which they meet regularly online in a virtual classroom. Integral Foundation Days introduce each unit, and additional support days are provided to assist learning and assessments. Online applied assessments can also benefit their career or organisation. Excellent networking opportunities are available with like-minded PR professionals and academics.
Normally a good UK Honours degree (minimum 2.2), or international equivalent, in any subject. We will consider your application if you have significant, relevant experience or degree equivalent professional qualifications.
Applicants whose 1st language is not English (and whose 1st degree was not taught in English) are required to produce evidence of English Language proficiency to TEFL minimum score 600 (minimum 4.0 in written test) or IELTS normal score 7.0 [must achieve 6.5 minimum in written English]. Applicants who have an IELTS score of 6.5 may be considered for enrolment provided they successfully complete an approved MMU English language course. If you are a mature student with relevant professional qualifications or you have previously studied for a postgraduate certificate or diploma, you may be eligible for an advanced standing route on this programme.
Modules include: public relations theory and strategy; strategic digital and social media communications; corporate reputation and media management, including media law; leadership and management in public relations, including ethics and professionalism; academic research skills and finally, a research project or consultancy dissertation.
Assessment is 100 per cent through assignments. There are no exams. Assessment methods include: Business reports; presentations; critical reflections; case study responses; podcast; research project or dissertation.
