Leadership in Early Years
The MA Leadership in Early Years provides an opportunity for practitioners, leaders and managers in a diversity of early years' contexts to engage in substantial continuing professional development at Masters level. Developing knowledge and understanding of the distinctive context of leadership in early years' provision and multi-agency working is a key feature of the award. In a context of significant shifts in services for young children and families, professional reflection and enquiry is an important attribute for leaders who are expected to maintain quality and deliver improvements, sometimes with fewer resources. The MA Leadership in Early Years challenges students to think deeply about their own professional role as change agents in improving services for children and families. The award encourages a focus on ideas, research and theory around leadership, multi-agency working, improving communication between individuals and the empowerment of children together with the communities that support them. We encourage applications from practitioners, professionals and leaders who might be working (or volunteering) in a diverse range of roles in education, health, social welfare/care, community, and other settings, and in the public, private, and voluntary or social enterprise sectors. We aim for an inter- and multi-professional student group on the award for the cross-fertilisation of knowledge, experience and expertise that can be brought to bear, and as it reflects complex challenges in practice and collaborative imperatives. This award is part of the Manchester Met Faculty of Education postgraduate Professional Development Programme. Modules include: Dissertation; mapping the territory: critical concepts and issues; research and practice; shaping the future; specialist support project: leadership in early years.
Assessment is by coursework for each unit and a full assignment brief is available for each unit. For taught units (30 credits) the assessment is 5000 words equivalent. The final (60 credit) dissertation is 12-14,000 words.
