PhD by Published Work (Route 2) - Health, Psychology & Social Care
This is an accelerated route for experienced practitioners and researchers who have a substantial number of publications in a thematically linked area. Your work should form a body of research and you'll need to demonstrate at least eight peer-reviewed publications, available in the public domain. An advisor will help you to adapt this research work and you'll need to submit a thesis of eight to 12 publications. You'll also submit a linking narrative that defines the context of the work and how each paper fits into the 'story' that the body of work describes. ? You'll submit a critical commentary of 10,000 - 15,000 words and your work will be examined. You'll be questioned on aspects of this work and you'll have the opportunity to respond constructively in a viva voce exam. Past and current examples of PhD by publication undertaken by medics include: screening for pre-eclampsia; emergency medical education and the interface with social media; advances in multidisciplinary tracheostomy care and their impact on the safety and quality of care in the critically ill.
PhD with Integrated Study: You will normally have a UK masters level qualification (or international equivalent) and a strong record of research publications to enrol in the doctorate programme. Applicants must submit their papers and a statement indicating the unifying theme of their research and its contribution to knowledge. This will be evaluated and if judged to be of appropriate standard, PhD candidates will be invited to an interview. Candidates must be graduates (or equivalent) of at least five years with a masters degree, research training or show evidence of having received research training or equivalent experience in their work environment.
