Autism Spectrum Conditions

This course aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and professional competence of staff working with individuals with Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC) and there is the opportunity to claim credit for prior learning. You will increase your knowledge of theoretical perspectives on the nature, causation, and impact of ASC. Over the course of your study you will develop, plan and evaluate individual courses to enhance learning opportunities and learn how to work more effectively with colleagues, other professionals and parents. As you progress, you will become more aware of your own professional practice and will develop the ability to critically examine and reflect on the benefits of different approaches to working with individuals with ASC. Entry requirements

You will normally need to hold a UK Honours degree (or international equivalent) or a teaching certificate (or similar), or an inital professional qualification that carries honours degree status, or an equivalent qualification giving access to postgraduate study, or experience based on attendance on autism specific or autism relevant courses with certification and experience working or living with young people or adults with Autism Spectrum Conditions.

Course modules

Core units: Understanding autism spectrum conditions; tutored study; autism spectrum conditions: issues and perspectives; approaches to working with and including young people with autism spectrum conditions; dissertation.

Assessment methods

All assessment is unit based and typically involves written assignments of 5,000 words. In some instances, presentations, individual case studies and portfolios of evidence of professional development may also be included as part of the assessment process.
