Manual Therapy (Advanced Physiotherapy)

The course begins with a comprehensive foundation to the assessment, treatment and management by manual therapists for patients with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. It is vital underpinning for further units dealing with specific clinical presentations. Further units will provide opportunities to specialise, providing clinicians with the knowledge and skills to assess, treat and manage patients with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, pelvis, lower limb and upper limb. The emphasis will be on clinical reasoning throughout and the acquisition of advanced clinical skills. This is 1 of 10 courses around the UK which is accredited as a course leading to MACP membership. To gain MACP membership students will need to complete either a PGDiploma or an MSc Manual Therapy. All modules must be completed for this award.

Entry requirements

Typically a UK Honours degree in Physiotherapy or graduate diploma in Physiotherapy together with evidence of an approved and relevant post qualification education. Additionally applicants should have a minimum of two years clinical experience, of which six months should have been in a neuromusculoskeletal out-patients and have access to neuromusculoskeletal patients whilst attending the course.

Assessment methods

This flexible course may be completed to individual time plans. Most modules may be undertaken as stand-alone continuing professional development (CPD). You will be assessed through a combination of essays, literature reviews, oral presentations, case studies, practical skills, examinations and dissertation. To complete the MSc you will need to carry out a research project having completed all the taught components.
