Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

This programme is aimed at those interested in the exciting and challenging profession of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). It is suitable for those at an early stage in their careers, those who are looking to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the area, and those interested in going on to PhD studies. Lectures and seminars are delivered by motivated, dedicated expert lecturers with many years of experience in both English Foreign Language teaching and postgraduate supervision. The course is available to distance learning students via the internet. You can participate in the programme through an international forum following the same units as you would if attending in person. Teaching and learning is tailored for distance-learning students and includes online discussion groups and tutorials.

Entry requirements

Applications are welcome from candidates with a good UK Honours degree in any subject, or an equivalent international, academic or professional qualification. However, candidates will be considered on their merits, as will people with non-traditional qualifications. Some teaching experience is desirable, but not essential provided applicants can show evidence of sustained interest in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

Course modules

Core units: Language teaching; language acquisition and learning; principles of language and linguistics; research methods; dissertation; or professional portfolio in TESOL. Option units may include; Technology in TESOL; teaching English to young learners; vocabulary; film pedagogy; materials and course design; independent study unit.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on a combination of essays, presentation projects, case studies or the preparation of lessons or course materials, and dissertation or professional portfolio.
