Applied Linguistics

The programme is a versatile, interdisciplinary course which aims to provide a solid understanding of the basis of language and linguistics and develop a valuable insight into the relationship between language, culture and society. The programme emphasises the practical application of theories to the social context and aims to enhance your analytical and linguistic skills by introducing different approaches to the analysis of language use.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to possess a good UK Honours degree in any subject or an equivalent international/academic qualification. However, candidates will be considered on their merits, as will people with non-traditional qualifications.

Course modules

Core units: Principles of language and linguistics; intercultural communication; sociolinguistics; research methods. Optional units: Critical discourse analysis; corpus and lexical studies; independent study; selected units from MA TESOL.

Assessment methods

Assessment for this course will include a range of strategies; each unit will have different assessment requirements and might take the form of a written piece of work, an oral presentation, a written exam, or a combination of these elements.
